MOBILE, Ala. — A new chapter in Alabama healthcare leadership is underway as Dr. Nina Ford Johnson, a Mobile pediatrician, steps into her role as president of

the Medical Association of the State of Alabama—becoming a leading voice for physicians and patients across the state.

Dr. Johnson was officially sworn in during the Association’s annual meeting, taking the helm of Alabama’s largest organization representing physicians. In her new role, she is focused on strengthening support for doctors while advancing policies that improve patient care and access statewide.

“A physician’s first responsibility is always to our patients,” Johnson said. “I am honored to lead an organization that is dedicated to supporting physicians and advocating for policies that allow us to provide the best possible care to our patients.”

Originally from Indiana, Dr. Johnson has served the Mobile community as a general pediatrician since 2011. Her journey into medicine is rooted in both education and service. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Tennessee State University in 2003 and later received her medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 2008—both historically Black institutions known for producing healthcare leaders.

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Johnson has also been active in public health. She served on the Mobile County Board of Health from 2014 to 2019, contributing to local health initiatives and policy discussions that impact families across the region.

Her leadership within the Medical Association has been steadily growing. Over the past year, she served as president-elect under outgoing president Dr. Mark LeQuire, gaining valuable insight into statewide healthcare priorities and physician needs.

The Medical Association of the State of Alabama plays a critical role in advocating for the medical community. The organization works to protect the physicianpatient relationship, support healthcare professionals, and promote policies that expand access to quality care—especially in underserved communities. For many across Alabama, Dr. Johnson’s appointment represents more than a leadership change—it reflects progress, representation, and a continued commitment to better health outcomes for all.

As she begins her term, Dr. Johnson’s focus remains clear: supporting physicians, strengthening communities, and ensuring every patient receives the care they deserve.
