SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Decatur is making a major investment in its future, with city leaders moving forward on a transformative project that could reshape both athletics and student life in the River City.
The Decatur City Council has approved a resolution allowing Mayor Tab Bowling to negotiate a final agreement for a new Calhoun Community College sports complex and student housing development. The city’s contribution—capped at $3 million—will help secure land and relocate utilities for the project.
Plans call for relocating Calhoun’s baseball and softball programs to a new, high-visibility site along the Sixth Avenue corridor, bringing college athletics closer to the heart of the community.
“Our current fields are on the east side of Pryor Field… this will present college athletics in downtown Decatur,” said Calhoun President Dr. Jimmy Hodges. “We hope it will increase our fan base and give people an opportunity to see a community college athletic sporting event.”
The proposed complex will feature modern amenities such as turf fields, LED lighting, and covered seating—creating a more engaging experience for athletes and fans alike.
But the vision goes beyond sports. Plans also include a 200-bed residence hall, addressing the growing need for affordable student housing while enhancing campus life.
City leaders say the development aligns with broader revitalization efforts along the Sixth Avenue corridor.
“It’ll be a significant upgrade… it’ll create more energy in the area,” said City Council President Kyle Pike.
Officials believe the project will boost local businesses, attract visitors, and strengthen the connection between the college and the community.
With a target opening as early as spring 2028, the project represents more than construction—it’s a step toward long-term growth, opportunity, and pride for Decatur residents.
