HUNTSVILLE, AL (March 24, 2026) — The City of Huntsville is now accepting applications for the 2026–2027 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), a yearlong leadership program designed to engage local high school students in civic life.

The program is open to students entering grades 9 through 12 and offers a unique opportunity to learn about city government, connect with community leaders, and contribute to initiatives that impact Huntsville’s youth.

Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at 10 p.m.

Mayor Tommy Battle said the council plays a key role in shaping future leaders.

“The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council gives students a chance to understand how their city works while making meaningful contributions,” Battle said. “Huntsville’s future depends on the voices and talents of our next generation.”

Applicants must live within Huntsville city limits and attend a school located in the city. Residency and enrollment will be verified during the review process.

To apply, students must:

Submit a completed application

Provide at least one letter of recommendation

Include an official or unofficial transcript showing cumulative GPA

Obtain parent or guardian consent if under age 18

Council members meet at least one Saturday each month and are expected to maintain strong attendance. Participants also engage in volunteer projects, special events and leadership development activities throughout the school year.

Dr. Randy Barbour Jr., Director of Multicultural Affairs, said the program continues to empower students.

“MYAC gives young people a platform to turn their ideas into action,” Barbour said.
