For Huntsville Parks & Recreation, 2025 was a year of big plays, expanded access, and stronger community connections. From new facilities to broader programming, the department continued building momentum while enhancing quality of life across the city.
Early in the year, Parks & Recreation launched a new online registration platform, making it easier for residents to browse programs, register for activities, and reserve facilities in one convenient location. The system simplified participation and helped residents more easily connect with the department’s wide range of offerings.
The 2025 National Parks & Recreation Month theme, Build Together, Play Together, proved especially fitting. The department celebrated the opening of three major amenities: the Stoner Park Skating Rink, The Park at Hays Farm, and the West Huntsville Recreation Center. Each new space was designed to serve residents of all ages while promoting play, wellness, and community connection.
In addition to new facilities, Parks & Recreation continued investing in park improvements citywide. Projects included upgrades at Mayfair Park, enhancements at McGucken Park, and public art installations through partnerships with Arts Huntsville. These efforts reinforced the department’s commitment to maintaining vibrant public spaces that encourage engagement and social interaction.
Athletics also had a strong year. Recreation leagues welcomed more than 5,500 athletes across sports such as baseball, softball, and basketball. Facilities and staff supported local, regional, and national sporting events, further positioning Huntsville as a destination for competitive sports.
Programming expanded in both size and variety, with quarterly guides featuring more than 100 activities across health, wellness, arts, education, and community connection. School break camps served over 400 Huntsville City Schools students, while new offerings like chair yoga and expanded dance classes attracted new participants.
Community engagement remained central, with eight free, citywide events including Eggstravaganza, Color Jam, and Light Up the Night bringing residents together.
“2025 was a successful year for Huntsville Parks & Recreation,” said Director James Gossett. “We’re excited about the opportunities we continue to provide for our community.”
Looking ahead to 2026, Parks & Recreation remains focused on creating spaces where Huntsville can play, connect, and thrive.
