$389 Million in Roadwork: Huntsville’s Traffic Future Is Under Construction

HUNTSVILLE, AL — Nearly $389 million in road construction projects are reshaping Huntsville’s streets, highways, and commuter corridors. Led by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) in coordination with the City of Huntsville, these efforts are part of a comprehensive plan to modernize infrastructure, alleviate congestion, and enhance safety throughout the metro area.

🚧 Projects on the Move

U.S. 72 Widening
More than $90 million will be spent expanding U.S. 72 from Providence Main to County Line Road. Work will roll out in three phases, with the first beginning in Fiscal Year 2026 and full completion expected by 2030.

I-565 Expansion
$41.8 million expansion between County Line Road and Wall Triana Highway is 10% complete, with the finish line expected in fall 2026.

Northern Bypass
This $43 million connector from Pulaski Pike to U.S. 231/431 is currently in progress, with a focus on utility relocation and grading. Currently 25% complete, it marks a key piece of the regional bypass system.

Memorial Parkway at Mastin Lake Road
The $44 million project to build a new overpass and improve frontage roads is 40% complete, streamlining one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

Martin Road Improvements (Phase II)
Estimated at $42 million, this project is 20% complete and involves critical upgrades along a key defense corridor.

Other notable projects include:

  • Winchester Road widening ($28M, start FY2026)
  • Blake Bottom Road enhancements ($20.8M, expected FY2025)
  • Jeff Road widening (in planning, $13.5M)
  • Madison Blvd. resurfacing (80% complete, $4.2M)

These infrastructure efforts are part of Huntsville’s broader Restore Our Roads cost-share initiative with ALDOT, which aims to enhance mobility and connectivity throughout the growing metro area.
