ALDOT Seeks Public Input on U.S. 72 Safety Improvements in Madison County

Big changes could be coming to Highway 72 — and ALDOT wants to hear from you before plans are finalized.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Drivers who travel U.S. Highway 72 East in Madison County now have an opportunity to weigh in on proposed safety improvements along one of the region’s busiest — and most talked-about — corridors.

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is accepting public comments through April 8 on a plan targeting a nearly six-mile stretch of Highway 72, from Shields Road in Huntsville to Brock Road.

The corridor includes 15 major intersections, along with dozens of business entrances and residential access points — a combination that has long raised concerns about congestion and safety.

ALDOT officials say the proposed updates aim to reduce crashes while improving traffic flow. The plan includes adding turn lanes, modifying intersections, and limiting certain movements to right-in, right-out access at several locations, including Old Gurley Road and Lawler Drive.

Some intersections, such as Parton Road, could be closed entirely, with traffic redirected via new connector roads. Other areas, such as Dug Hill Road and Wall Cutoff Road, would see expanded turn lanes to ease bottlenecks.

To maintain accessibility, ALDOT is also proposing U-turn lanes and “loons,” designed to help larger vehicles safely navigate restricted intersections.

For many residents and business owners, Highway 72 is more than a commute — it’s a daily challenge. The proposed changes reflect ongoing efforts to balance growth, safety, and access in a rapidly expanding region.

Community feedback will play a key role in shaping the final design. Residents can review maps, design plans, and potential property impacts and submit comments online at aldotinvolved.com.

ALDOT officials say all input received by the deadline will be considered before moving forward with the project.
