HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — As the federal government shutdown stretches into its third week, Huntsville Utilities (HU) has announced an extension of its moratorium on late fees and service disconnections to help residents facing financial uncertainty.

“Many of our customers are directly or indirectly affected by this government shutdown, and we want to give them one less thing to worry about during this uncertain time,” said Wes Kelley, President & CEO of Huntsville Utilities, in a statement to WHNT. “Our priority is to support this community and ensure uninterrupted service while people focus on their families and essential needs.”

HU first paused late fees and disconnections earlier this year as part of its transition to a new billing platform. The extended moratorium ensures that customers will continue to receive uninterrupted electric, water, and natural gas service for the duration of the shutdown.

Until the federal government reopens, Huntsville Utilities will not:

  • Charge late fees on accounts
  • Disconnect services for nonpayment

Once operations resume in Washington, HU said it will work with customers on flexible payment arrangements to help them catch up on their bills.

Residents with billing concerns or questions are encouraged to contact Huntsville Utilities Customer Service at 256-535-1200 or email custserv@hsvutil.org.

The ongoing shutdown, now in its 16th day, has caused ripple effects across Alabama as federal workers, contractors, and local businesses feel the strain of delayed paychecks and suspended services. The nation’s longest shutdown lasted 34 days, from December 2018 to January 2019, during President Trump’s first term.

HU officials said their focus remains on supporting local families until stability returns.
