MONTGOMERY, AL — A new report has confirmed what many already believed — Alabama is the most religious state in the United States.
The study, which measured factors such as religious interest, the number of places of worship per capita, and the percentage of residents who identify with a faith tradition, ranked Alabama above all other states. Evangelical Protestantism remains the dominant faith tradition, with significant representation from Baptist, Methodist, and Pentecostal congregations.
Researchers found that faith continues to play a central role in Alabama’s cultural identity, influencing community events, charitable work, and political discourse. From rural towns to major cities, church attendance rates remain well above the national average, and religious institutions often double as hubs for civic engagement and social support.
While Alabama scored highest for religious engagement, the same report ranked the state 20th in the nation for religious liberty protections, suggesting room for improvement in policies that safeguard the rights of people of all faiths — or no faith — equally.
