HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A student at Grissom High School was arrested after a firearm was discovered in a vehicle on campus, prompting swift action from school officials and law enforcement.
According to school and police officials, the incident began with an altercation between two students inside the school. A Huntsville Police Department School Resource Officer (SRO) intervened to stop the fight and received a tip that one of the students involved may have had a weapon.
The student was quickly identified, stopped and searched, but no firearm was found at that time. As the investigation continued, officials determined the student had exited the building earlier, leading authorities to search a vehicle on campus where the firearm was ultimately located.
The student was taken into custody and removed from campus. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to students or staff.
Grissom High School Principal David Coker said the situation was handled quickly and in accordance with established safety protocols, with no disruption to the school day. He added that the student will face serious disciplinary action and will not be returning to the school.
Officials also credited students for following the “see something, say something” approach, which helped bring the situation to light.
As a precaution, additional security will remain on campus for the rest of the week while officials continue to prioritize student safety.
