Actress Phylicia Rashad will deliver the commencement address at Oakwood University’s 2026 graduation ceremony in Huntsville.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — One of America’s most iconic voices in television, theater, and education is headed to Huntsville to celebrate the next generation of leaders.

Oakwood University has announced that award-winning actress and director Phylicia Rashad will serve as the 2026 commencement speaker, bringing star power, wisdom, and inspiration to this year’s graduating class.

The ceremony is set for May 8 at the Von Braun Civic Center, where graduates, families and community members will gather for a milestone moment marking years of hard work and achievement.

Rashad, widely recognized for her role as Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has built a legacy that extends far beyond television. With a distinguished career on stage and screen — including Tony Awards and Emmy nominations — she has also made a lasting impact in higher education, most recently serving as dean of the College of Fine Arts at Howard University.

Oakwood officials described her as “legendary,” highlighting the significance of bringing a nationally respected figure to address graduates at one of Huntsville’s most historic institutions.

As a historically Black university, Oakwood continues to emphasize leadership, service and academic excellence — values that align with Rashad’s career and influence.

For the Class of 2026, the moment represents more than a graduation ceremony. It is an opportunity to hear from a trailblazer whose work has shaped culture, elevated Black excellence and opened doors for generations.

With Rashad set to take the stage, this year’s commencement promises to be both memorable and meaningful — a powerful sendoff for students preparing to make their mark on the world.
