A heartbreaking tragedy in Birmingham has led to criminal charges and renewed concerns about child safety and drug exposure in the home.
Authorities have arrested 25-year-old Brandi Stokes following the death of her 3-year-old niece, Ke’Mani Denise Marie Harrison. Stokes is charged with chemical endangerment of a child involving death, according to Birmingham police.
The toddler was found unresponsive in the early morning hours of January 25 and later pronounced dead on January 27 at Children’s of Alabama. Officials say the child ingested a powerful illicit opioid the day before.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates confirmed the cause of death as accidental opioid toxicity involving N-propionitrile chlorphine, a dangerous substance first identified in the U.S. in late 2024. Opioids like this can suppress breathing and quickly become fatal, especially in young children.
This case highlights a growing concern across Alabama and the nation regarding the presence of highly potent synthetic drugs in communities.
For families, experts stress the importance of keeping all medications and substances securely stored and out of reach of children.
As the case moves forward, the focus remains on accountability, awareness, and preventing future tragedies.
