Nationwide — A disturbing and complex case is unfolding in Tennessee, where former NFL player Darron Lee is accused of killing his girlfriend and allegedly attempting to seek digital guidance before contacting authorities.
Lee, 31, a former first-round draft pick for the New York Jets, has been charged in connection with the death of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo, who was found unresponsive inside their Ooltewah home.
According to prosecutors, Lee sent messages to an artificial intelligence chatbot days before calling 911, describing Perpétuo’s condition and asking questions about how the situation might appear accidental. Authorities claim these messages are now part of the evidence against him.
When police arrived, Lee reportedly told officers that Perpétuo—who had narcolepsy—fell in the shower. However, investigators say the scene revealed signs of a violent struggle, including blood throughout the home and damaged property.
An autopsy later determined that Perpétuo suffered multiple traumatic injuries inconsistent with an accident. Officials also noted evidence suggesting an attempted cleanup.
Lee has been charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. Prosecutors say they intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
