The City of Madison has officially brought the Costco at Clift Farm within its city limits following action by the Madison City Council.
At its meeting on Monday, Jan. 12, the council approved annexing the property, which had previously been located in unincorporated Madison County. The move formally incorporates one of the area’s largest retail destinations into the city.
City officials said the annexation will not disrupt services and will change how sales taxes are applied. Beginning Feb. 18, the 2% developer fee currently charged at the location will expire. Shoppers will instead pay Madison’s standard 9% sales tax, consistent with other retail businesses throughout the city.
Police and fire protection will continue without interruption, officials said. Mutual aid agreements were already in place before the annexation and will remain active to ensure public safety services are maintained.
City leaders said the annexation strengthens Madison’s commercial development profile and supports long-term economic growth.
By bringing the Costco fully into city limits, Madison officials say the city can better plan infrastructure, public services and future development surrounding the Clift Farm area, while maintaining consistent services for residents and businesses.
The Costco at Clift Farm has become a major regional shopping destination since opening, drawing customers from across North Alabama and neighboring communities. City officials say the annexation reflects Madison’s ongoing efforts to manage growth in high-traffic commercial corridors.
No changes to store operations are expected as a result of the annexation.
