MOBILE, Ala. — Alabama A&M University’s men’s basketball team showed poise down the stretch Monday night, using clutch free-throw shooting to secure a 73–69 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alabama State during the Bridge Builder Classic at the Mitchell Center.
The Bulldogs improved to 10–8 overall and 3–2 in conference play, surviving a physical contest that featured 17 lead changes and 11 ties before sealing the rivalry win in the final seconds.
Alabama State opened the game with an 8–2 run, but Alabama A&M quickly responded with defensive pressure and transition scoring. Koron Davis sparked the Bulldogs with a fast-break dunk early in the first half, shifting momentum. Sami Pissis later tied the game with a three-pointer off a turnover as Alabama A&M capitalized on forced mistakes.
Midway through the half, Kintavious Dozier scored back-to-back fast-break layups to give the Bulldogs a brief edge. Pissis added two free throws in the final minute, allowing Alabama A&M to take a slim 33–32 lead into halftime.
The second half mirrored the opening period, with neither team able to pull away. Alabama State briefly reclaimed the lead, but Pissis answered at the foul line. Dozier connected on a key second-chance three-pointer to push Alabama A&M back in front, and Pissis followed with a turnover layup to extend the margin.
Alabama State rallied to tie the game at 69 late, setting up a tense finish. Pissis broke the tie with a driving layup and free throw in the closing seconds. Davis sealed the win, knocking down four consecutive free throws after forcing a turnover.
Pissis led all scorers with 22 points, while Dozier added 19 and Davis chipped in 12, going 8-for-10 from the line. Alabama A&M shot 82.8% from the free-throw line, forced 20 turnovers, and scored 21 fast-break points.
