LEE COUNTY — An Alabama mother is behind bars after authorities say she tried to fatally smother her 4-month-old daughter inside a Phenix City home early Monday morning.
Lee County sheriff’s deputies responded around 12:30 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a woman attempting to suffocate her infant. Deputies arrived at the residence on Lee Road 212 within minutes and began interviewing witnesses at the scene.
According to sheriff’s officials, witnesses reported seeing 28-year-old Mireire Johana Garcia Lucero trying to smother the baby. They also alleged they saw Lucero choke and violently shake the infant in an attempt to stop her from crying.
Emergency personnel transported the baby to Piedmont Hospital in Columbus, where authorities say she was alert and appeared to be in good health at the time of evaluation. Additional medical assessments are ongoing.
Lucero has been charged with attempted murder along with torture and willful abuse of a child. She is currently being held in the Lee County Jail, with bond set at $85,000.
Sheriff’s investigators continue to gather evidence and interview additional witnesses. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 334-749-5651 or Central Alabama Crime Stoppers at 334-215-STOP (7867).
The case remains under active investigation.
