Volunteers and community members gather at Shenanigans Comedy Theater in Huntsville to stock and organize the new community food pantry — an effort inspired by compassion and fueled by teamwork.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Laughter may be the best medicine, but one Huntsville comedy theater is proving that healing comes in many forms — including helping those in need.

The Shenanigans Comedy Theater, located at 2650 Leeman Ferry Road SW, Suite A, Huntsville, Alabama 35801, is known for its stand-up comedy, improv shows, and community events. Now, the theater is expanding its mission beyond entertainment. Through its nonprofit arm, The Center, Shenanigans offers a community food pantry, along with a free clothing closet and library.

When news broke that SNAP/EBT benefits might be suspended, volunteers contacted co-founder Jessica Cotton about creating a pantry. “Three different people were like, messaging me at the same time,” Cotton told AL.com. “By the end of the day, they’re all a committee.”

Volunteers Mollie Holder, Janet Stephens, Sarah Thorton, and Justin Butler organized the effort after learning that more than 754,000 Alabamians could go without food. “Living paycheck to paycheck is a reality for over 60% of Americans,” Holder said. “The cost of living has skyrocketed.”

Within five days, The Pantry at Shenanigans was fully operational. The inclusive pantry accommodates those with dietary restrictions and also provides toiletries, feminine hygiene products, and pet food. It operates Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At Shenanigans Comedy Theater, the laughter continues — now joined by compassion, service, and community care.
