HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — North Alabama’s construction boom is showing no signs of slowing down. More than 500 building projects, with a combined value exceeding $198 million, have begun across the Huntsville area since Oct. 8, signaling ongoing regional expansion in housing, retail, hospitality, and community facilities.

The most expensive project in the pipeline is the dual-brand Hilton hotel development next to Joe Davis Stadium, but several other large-scale projects are also reshaping the landscape — including the Toyota Field expansion, major church renovations, and a new Publix supermarket in Athens.

Major Developments Across the Region

According to reportconstruction.com, Huntsville led the region with 206 permits valued at $71.3 million, followed by Madison County with 210 permits worth $70.8 million. The City of Madison issued 42 permits totaling $32.6 million, while Athens approved 25 projects valued at $19.7 million.

Toyota Field Expansion in Madison

The City of Madison issued a $7.5 million permit for the Toyota Field expansion, part of Major League Baseball’s new facility requirements. The one-story addition will include a new visitor’s locker room and dedicated facilities for female staff and umpires, all to be completed by April 2026.

Caliber 1 Construction is serving as the contractor. City officials have also hinted at future upgrades — including additional seating, event space, and a removable outfield fence to host other sports such as football and soccer.

Church Renovations and Additions

Faith-based projects are among the region’s most notable investments. First Baptist Church of Huntsville, located at 600 Governors Drive, is undergoing an $8.9 million sanctuary renovation that will include an elevated choir loft for 108 singers, improved sight lines, refinished pews, new flooring, and upgraded LED lighting. JohnsonKreis Construction of Birmingham is the project’s contractor.

In Madison County, Mt. Zion Baptist Church is adding a $9.3 million expansion at 228 Mt. Zion Road, while Madison Church of Christ on Hughes Road is moving forward with a $7.6 million building project led by Preston Builders of Athens.

New Publix Coming to Athens

Athens is set to welcome a new Publix supermarket at the intersection of Mooresville Road and U.S. 72. The $11 million project will anchor the new French Mill Crossing shopping center on a 12-acre site. A $400,000 Community Development Block Grant from Governor Kay Ivey’s office helped make the project possible by funding road improvements. Ram General Contractor of Georgia is overseeing construction.

Homebuilding Remains Strong

Residential development continues to thrive, led by Lennar Homes of Alabama, which received 40 permits totaling $6.6 million. Other major builders include Breland Homes ($3.8 million) and Davidson Homes ($2.8 million).

Luxury home construction is also robust. Maverick Builders is building a $1.7 million home on Dan Crutcher Road in HuntsvilleWoodland Homes is constructing a $1.2 million, 5,619-square-foot residence in Madison, and Guild Builders of Huntsville is developing a $1 million property on Hurricane Road.

City officials say these projects highlight North Alabama’s steady economic growth, driven by population increases, job creation, and ongoing investments in infrastructure and community amenities.
