Dr. Charles L. Karr, the 10th president of the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), announced he will retire at the end of the spring 2026 term, concluding more than four years of leadership at the university.
“Serving as president of UAH has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Karr said. “Together with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners, we have elevated UAH’s impact across research, academics, and public service.”
Karr joined UAH as interim president in November 2021 and was appointed permanently in September 2022 after serving as dean of engineering at the University of Alabama.
Under his leadership, UAH launched several major projects, including the construction of the Raymond B. Jones Engineering Building, renovations to the Bevill Center, and expansion of cybersecurity research. The university’s and foundation’s endowment surpassed $100 million during his tenure.
UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant praised Karr’s leadership, saying his vision “positioned UAH for an even brighter future.”
After retirement, Karr and his wife, Jodie, plan to live in Florida.
