Huntsville City Schools to Gain Hands-on STEM Programming through Toyota’s $4.2 Million Driving Possibilities Investment

SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 17, 2025) – For nearly 25 years, Toyota Alabama has been more than an engine plant. The company has invested in Huntsville’s workforce, strengthened the community, and expanded educational opportunities for local students. Now, Toyota is looking even further into the future with the expansion of its Driving Possibilities initiative, backed by a Toyota USA Foundation grant of up to $4.2 million for Huntsville City Schools.

Driving Possibilities, supported by Toyota USA Foundation with additional funds from Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Financial Services, is designed to expand access to quality STEM education and build pathways into high-demand careers. Today’s announcement builds on a previous $6.7 million commitment, bringing Toyota’s total Driving Possibilities investment in Huntsville to nearly $11 million.

“Toyota is assembling more than just engines in Huntsville—we’re investing in our future,” said Marc Perry, president of Toyota Alabama. “Engaging students early nurtures curiosity and equips them with essential skills to support their academic journey and help prepare them for future success in STEM careers.”

The initiative represents a collaborative effort with Huntsville City Schools and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber Foundation to close educational gaps through innovative, hands-on programming and wrap-around student support. New elements will include:

• A STEM coordinator serving the entire school district.

• STEM coaches embedded in six elementary and two middle schools to integrate STEM concepts into core subjects.

• Care Closets at 10 schools, in partnership with local nonprofit Caring Link, to supply essentials such as clothing, toiletries, and snacks.

• Parent engagement sessions hosted monthly by Second Mile, a nonprofit providing family support.

• Funding for Greenpower USA electric cars in 10 schools, giving students hands-on experience in engineering, manufacturing, and project management.

Dr. Clarence Sutton, superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, said:

“Huntsville City Schools is proud to continue the Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities initiative to help enhance STEM education across our district. Continuing our collaboration with Toyota, we remain committed, together, to creating customized learning experiences that foster academic achievement and personal growth, inspiring success both inside and outside the classroom.”

The investment builds upon Toyota’s earlier support of Huntsville City Schools, including the creation of the Industrial Tech (INDTECH) program at the new Center for Technology in 2023. That program offers students a direct pathway into high-demand manufacturing careers. Driving Possibilities has also funded teacher coaches, with support from the New Teacher Center, to strengthen classroom instruction and professional development.

Ana Meade, Toyota’s vice president of sustainable development, emphasized the broader mission: “We believe every student should have access to opportunities and a clear path to high-growth careers, regardless of their background. Through Driving Possibilities, we strive to remove barriers and create limitless possibilities, so communities can access quality STEM jobs in the future.”

Local leaders also praised the investment. Mayor Tommy Battle said, “For nearly 25 years, Toyota Alabama has been an incredible part of our community—not only assembling engines—but building opportunities and opening new career pathways for our students. This generous investment continues to close educational gaps, and we are grateful for Toyota’s commitment to educating Huntsville’s future.”

Lyndsay Ferguson, executive director of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber Foundation, added: “The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber Foundation is honored to collaborate with Toyota and Huntsville City Schools in shaping the future of our community and workforce by investing in today’s students. Strategic partnerships like this are essential to sustaining Huntsville’s reputation as ASmartPlace®—where education and industry work hand in hand to prepare the next generation for the careers of tomorrow.”

With this latest step, Toyota Alabama once again demonstrates that it’s not only building engines—it’s helping build Huntsville’s future.
