The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is moving forward with plans for a new South Precinct facility designed to strengthen law enforcement operations and improve community accessibility.
At its Aug. 14 meeting, the City Council approved the purchase of property for the new precinct at a cost of $435,973.50.
“The new South Precinct is about strengthening our operations,” said HPD Chief Kirk Giles. “From response times to accessibility, this facility will help us continue delivering the highest level of service to our community.”
Strategic Location
The proposed site is located just south of the Logan Drive and Commerce Parkway intersection, behind the Kroger shopping center and near Community Fellowship Baptist Church. Officials say the location offers direct access to the Parkway, a critical factor in improving response times and enhancing connectivity for both officers and residents.
District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson praised the move, pointing to rapid growth in South Huntsville neighborhoods, particularly in the Hays Farm area.
“A police precinct so close to existing neighborhoods and new developments will make it easier for neighbors to join HPD in watching out for one another,” Robinson said.
Next Steps
City officials noted the project is still in early planning stages. The precinct’s square footage, address, and construction timeline are yet to be finalized. Once funding for design work is secured, officials estimate 10–12 months for designfollowed by 12–14 months for construction.
As plans develop, HPD and city leaders say they will continue to provide updates to the community.
