WASHINGTON, D.C. — Netflix has officially pulled the plug on The Residence, the Shondaland-produced murder mystery series starring Emmy Award winner Uzo Aduba, after just one season. The announcement, which stunned both fans and critics, came only four months after the show’s highly anticipated debut in March.
Set against the backdrop of a fictionalized White House, The Residence followed Cordelia Cupp (Aduba), the self-proclaimed “greatest detective in the world,” as she unraveled a murder during a state dinner attended by political elites and staffers. The eight-episode series was loosely inspired by Kate Andersen Brower’s bestselling nonfiction book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House.
Though fictional in its narrative, the series offered viewers a rare dramatized glimpse into the private lives of residence staff while weaving in elements of political satire, suspense, and psychological intrigue. With its striking set design, ensemble cast, and high production value, the series quickly climbed to the No. 2 spot on Netflix’s global Top 10, generating nearly 9 million views in its debut week.
Despite these strong metrics and an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Netflix cited multiple reasons for the cancellation—including high production costs, limited longevity in viewership, and stiff competition from other breakout hits like Adolescence, which pulled in over 140 million streams. Industry insiders also pointed to the show’s large-scale recreation of the White House, which spanned seven sound stages and pushed production expenses beyond expectations.
Fans were quick to express outrage on social media, questioning why a series that was both well-reviewed and widely watched could be abruptly canceled. “#TheResidence is an AMAZING show,” one viewer wrote. “What is even the point of making shows anymore if they do well and you still cancel them????”
While The Residence was initially designed as an anthology—with future seasons expected to explore different mysteries within the same White House setting—its single-season arc did provide narrative closure, offering a satisfying ending for viewers.
All eight episodes of The Residence remain available for streaming on Netflix.
