HUNTSVILLE, AL — A recent study by GOBankingRates highlights Alabama as one of the most affordable states for retirees planning to live without relying on Social Security benefits. The analysis considered factors such as cost of living, average expenditures, and anticipated Social Security income to determine the minimum savings required for a comfortable retirement in each state.
In Alabama, the annual cost of living for retirees is estimated at $53,357. After accounting for an average annual Social Security income of $22,523.40, retirees would need approximately $773,000 in savings to cover the remaining expenses. This places Alabama among the top five states with the lowest retirement savings requirements, alongside West Virginia, Kansas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.
The study highlights the importance of considering location when planning for retirement, particularly for individuals who may not be able to rely on Social Security benefits. States like Alabama offer lower housing and healthcare costs, making them attractive options for retirees seeking to stretch their savings.
However, the report also notes that many Americans are not adequately prepared for retirement. The median retirement savings for those aged 55-64 is $185,000, significantly lower than the amounts needed in most states. Factors such as everyday expenses, debt, and healthcare costs are cited as major obstacles to saving adequately for retirement.
As the Social Security trust fund faces potential insolvency by 2033, resulting in possible benefit reductions, the study emphasizes the need for individuals to plan carefully and consider cost-effective states like Alabama for their retirement years.
