SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — On Monday, May 26, 2025, thousands of runners filled the streets of downtown Huntsville for the 45th Annual Cotton Row Run, a Memorial Day tradition that blends athleticism with heartfelt remembrance.
Hosted by the Huntsville Track Club, the event featured a 10K, 5K, and 1-mile fun run, drawing participants from across the region. But beyond the competition, the day served as a tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to the nation.
Along the final stretch of the course, runners passed through a living memorial—a corridor lined with American flags and volunteers representing Gold Star families from North Alabama. The powerful display reminded participants of the deeper meaning behind the race.
“The sacrifice that all these people did before me, so for me this is a small sacrifice that I do for them,” said U.S. Army active-duty member Vincente Rivera, who ran in honor of fallen comrades.
U.S. Air Force veteran Keith White echoed the sentiment: “I served with a number of people over in Afghanistan, who didn’t all make it back, but this makes it more special to be able to be here today and honor them, especially the families down at the end and what they’ve sacrificed as well.”
The Cotton Row Run, first held in 1980, has become a cornerstone of Huntsville’s Memorial Day observances. Proceeds from the race benefit Gold Star families and other local charities, reinforcing the community’s commitment to honoring its heroes.
As the sun rose over Big Spring Park, runners of all ages and backgrounds took to the course, united by a shared purpose: to remember, to honor, and to run with gratitude.
