Dr. Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, concluded her Huntsville visit on Monday, August 29, 2022, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Charger Theater. During her Huntsville weekend visit, Dr. Lee visited Oakwood University for a book signing, Highlands Elementary School, where she read to students, toured Alabama A&M University (she was interviewed earlier on AAMU’s WJAB-FM 90.9 radio station by Erica Fox), was hosted at a reception at the Robert “Bob” Harrison Senior Wellness and Advocacy Center, worshipped at St. John A.M.E. Church and a final stop at UAH. The event at UAH was sponsored by the UAH College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the United Women of Color (UWOC). At UAH, Dr. Lee was given a proclamation from the city of Huntsville by the Mayor of Huntsville, Tommy Battle, declaring Monday, August 29, 2022, Opal Lee Day in Huntsville. She was interviewed by WAFF, channel 48 news anchor Margo Gray. Following the interview Dr. Lee answered questions from the audience and autographed copies of her book.
