One Woman’s Opinion

Jackie Reed, Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers that subscribe and read this publication. I want to wish all the mothers a Happy Mother’s Day and hope you all have a blessed day.

The Huntsville Times has almost quit covering and publishing the news and Mr. Newhouse would not like what his paper has become. His daughter is in charge now and does not have many employees. The paper barely includes any comments from the public and has very little coverage about the city and its developments. Sometimes they do have a reporter at the Council Meetings to cover stories but not like they used to do.

GRADUATIONS

Next weekend is a big weekend as my oldest Grandson will be graduating from Auburn University. We will all be there to celebrate as we are very proud of him. His girlfriend will be graduating from the University of Alabama on Friday and we are very proud of her too. I want to wish all the graduates a happy and blessed future.

SCHOOL OUT

At the end of May all the schools will be out and the students will be begin enjoying summer. Many will be looking for jobs while many high school seniors will be preparing to begin college in the fall. My youngest grandson will be graduating from Huntsville High and we are all excited for him.

ELECTION

There is a Primary Election on May 24th for the Democrats and Republicans and if there is a runoff, it will be held on June 21. There are many running for office and I hope whoever wins will be focused on taking care of the people’s safety and quit changing all the laws that weaken our judicial system. Many good laws have been changed by the politicians in Montgomery without being discussed or questioned in terms of the affect they have on the safety of the citizens.

CITY LEADERS

Our City Leaders are also looking at changing our laws much like they did the Ordinances in the city.  This Administration and City Council has changed so many things it is disgusting. They believe they are smarter than all the other 4 Mayors and possibly over 23 City Council members I have worked with for the past 30 years. The council agenda has changed so much for the worse such as moving public comments to the end of the meetings after the council has already voted on the items. The City Manager gives many presentations at the meetings that the public cannot keep up with but are not allowed to question.

I read it in the paper that the City Council and Mayor are considering allowing police officers to ticket people for misdemeanor marijuana possession instead of arresting them and taking them to jail. Councilman Devyn Keith is leading this effort. This change would not decriminalize marijuana possession which would remain a Class A misdemeanor that carries up to 1 year in prison and up to $6,000 in fines. We should leave our laws alone.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
