Monyuett Catrice Hinson pleaded guilty to felony murder in the 2021 death of 76-year-old Alverner Blanks, who was beaten during a dispute at his Bessemer home.

A Fairfield woman has pleaded guilty in the 2021 slaying of a 76-year-old Bessemer man who authorities say was beaten with a space heater during a dispute over money.

Monyuett Catrice Hinson, 29, originally charged with capital murder in the death of Alverner Blanks, entered a guilty plea Friday to a reduced charge of felony murder. Circuit Judge David Carpenter sentenced her to 24 years in prison. The plea agreement was reached with the consent of the victim’s family. Hinson will receive credit for time already served.

Prosecutors said the fatal attack occurred Sept. 8, 2021, at Blanks’ home in the 2300 block of Holbrook Terrace. Police said Blanks and Hinson were neighbors and acquaintances. Investigators believe an argument over money escalated, and Hinson allegedly struck Blanks in the head with a space heater. It remains unclear how many times he was hit.

After the assault, Hinson left the residence. A neighbor later found Blanks unresponsive and called authorities. He was hospitalized and later transferred to an assisted living facility, where he died three days later. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.

Hinson was initially arrested on attempted murder, robbery, and hindering prosecution charges before a capital murder warrant was issued. Prosecutors said the charge was elevated because money and clothing belonging to Blanks were allegedly taken.

Assistant District Attorney Brent Butler prosecuted the case. Hinson was represented by attorneys Yusuf Olufemi and Leslie Moore.
