A Tuscaloosa man remains in critical condition after being shot multiple times Sunday night in what police say may be a case of self-defense.
Tuscaloosa police were dispatched at approximately 7:30 p.m. to the 600 block of 38th Street on a report of a shooting. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition on Monday.
Investigators say the woman who fired the shots remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. She told police that she and the victim had been in a relationship for several years and lived together. She also reported a history of domestic violence between the two, and police confirmed there had been previous reports.
According to Capt. Kennedy, the argument escalated Sunday evening, prompting the woman to retreat to an inoperable vehicle parked nearby to get away from the man.
“While locked in the vehicle, she called 911 and reported that the male was beating on the windows of the vehicle, attempting to break them to get to her,” Kennedy said.
“When police arrived on scene, the male had been shot several times,” he said. “The female stated she shot in self-defense.”
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing. Because issues of self-defense have been raised, no arrest has been made at this time.
Police continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the case develops.
