Athens State University has been named a 2025-26 College of Distinction, a national designation recognizing the school’s commitment to engaged and experiential undergraduate education.
The honor comes from Colleges of Distinction, an organization that evaluates institutions based on what it calls its “Four Distinctions” — Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community and Successful Outcomes. Selection includes research and interviews, with a focus on educational impact rather than traditional rankings.
“This recognition as a College of Distinction reflects the spirit of who we are at Athens State University,” said Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, president of Athens State. “We believe education should be transformative, an experience that not only expands knowledge, but shapes confidence, purpose and possibility.” The university’s emphasis on student success, faculty engagement and hands-on learning helped it stand out among peer institutions.
Tyson Schritter, chief operating officer at Colleges of Distinction, said Athens State’s programs reflect intentional design and prepare students for life after graduation. “Athens State University has crafted a campus culture where students are empowered to take ownership of their learning,” Schritter said.
The College of Distinction honor also includes specific recognitions: Athens State was named a Business College of Distinction, an Education College of Distinction, and awarded a Career Development badge for demonstrated commitment to career readiness.
Founded in 1822, Athens State is Alabama’s oldest institution of higher education and operates as an upper-division university serving transfer students and those completing bachelor’s degrees. The university offers more than 50 undergraduate programs across majors like business, education and the arts and sciences, and emphasizes flexible pathways to graduation.
This national recognition underscores Athens State’s dedication to student engagement, community and outcomes — a distinction both current students and alumni can celebrate.
