As Redstone Arsenal’s role in national defense continues to expand, the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 Redstone Update offered key insights into the missions, investments, and organizational changes shaping the installation’s future.
Held on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at the Von Braun Center, the annual event brought together military leaders, federal agency representatives, and community stakeholders to discuss both the opportunities and challenges facing one of North Alabama’s most significant economic an
strategic drivers.
Richard De Fatta, deputy to the commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC), said the organization has nearly quadrupled in size following the integration of two Army Air and Missile Defense Commands.
“The addition of these two AAMDCs enhances our capacity and capabilities in air and missile defense and underpins our transformation into a lethal war-fighting command,” De Fatta said.“SMDC now truly has assigned forces covering mud to space.”
De Fatta emphasized that homeland defense remains a top priority as SMDC evolves.
The FBI’s growing presence at Redstone was also highlighted. Kevin Jones, deputy assistant
director of the FBI, discussed the agency’s South Campus, currently under construction and
expected to be completed by 2030. The advanced training facility is projected to train 13,000
personnel annually.
“The growth of the FBI workforce is enabled by partnerships like those represented in this
room,” Jones said.
During the luncheon, Lt. Gen. Gavin Lawrence, Army Materiel Command deputy commanding
general and Redstone Arsenal senior commander, addressed a packed audience, reflecting on a year marked by rapid change and resilience.
“Redstone is thriving,” Lawrence said, noting the installation’s readiness to welcome U.S. Space Command.
The keynote address was delivered by Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of U.S. Space
Command, who underscored the critical role space plays in national defense and everyday life.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining uninterrupted operations as the command
transitions to Huntsville.
Lawrence closed by praising the Huntsville community’s collaborative support.“
Together, we will ensure Redstone Arsenal remains at the forefront of innovation and
excellence,” he said.
