Deadly Shooting Prompting Manhunt and Arrest
On October 4, downtown Montgomery erupted in gunfire shortly after the Tuskegee–Morehouse college football game, as rival gunmen opened fire in a crowded nightlife area. Two people were killed — 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams — and 12 others were wounded.
A multi-agency manhunt followed, with authorities seeking suspects across state and local jurisdictions. On October 10, a juvenile was arrested and charged with capital murder and assault in connection with the shooting.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described the shooting as “two parties basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd,” with little regard for civilians nearby. Council suspended the city’s downtown entertainment district designation and considered implementing a youth curfew.
Governor Kay Ivey joined condemnation efforts, promising increased state presence downtown and urging legislative support for law enforcement resources.
Elevation Hotel Opens as Montgomery’s Cultural Anchor
On October 8, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) officially opened Elevation Convening Center & Hotel in downtown Montgomery. The project redeveloped the former Hilltop Arms Apartments at 600 Montgomery Street and now offers lodging, gallery space, a theater, research center, and art exhibits tied to EJI’s Legacy Sites.
Amenities include AYA Soulful Dining, a café open to both guests and the public, fitness facilities, and convening spaces for cultural and educational programming. A highlight event scheduled for October 11 featured Branford Marsalis and Yo-Yo Ma in a concert as part of the hotel’s “Art & Justice” series. EJI’s next phase includes Montgomery Square, a new Legacy Site slated to open in February 2026.
