ATLANTA, Ga. — The 2025 HBCU football season opened with fireworks as North Carolina Central defeated Southern 31–14 in the annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Center Parc Stadium.
Senior running back Chris Mosley had a career night, rushing for 180 yards and breaking loose for a 49-yard touchdown that set the tone. Quarterback Walker Harris was equally sharp, completing 22 of 27 passes for 189 yardsand a touchdown to pace the Eagles’ balanced attack.
Southern struck early but couldn’t keep up. NCCU’s defense clamped down in the second half, shutting out the Jaguars and forcing multiple three-and-outs. The Eagles dominated time of possession, wearing down Southern’s defensive front and sealing the win with a late touchdown drive in the fourth quarter.
“This is how we wanted to start the season—fast, physical, and disciplined,” said Eagles head coach Trei Oliver. “We showed what MEAC football is all about.” The win gives NCCU valuable momentum heading into conference play, reinforcing their reputation as one of the MEAC’s top contenders. For Southern, the loss was a tough reminder of the work ahead, but their young roster showed flashes of promise.
