MONTGOMERY, AL — Nearly 59% of Alabama Republican primary voters say lawmakers should prioritize the economy over cultural battles, according to a recent poll reported by The Alabama Reporter.
Despite recent legislative focus on hot-button topics like book bans, diversity program restrictions, and other social policies, most GOP voters cited jobs, taxes, infrastructure, and the cost of living as their top concerns. Rural respondents in particular voiced frustration that the Legislature spends more time on symbolic measures than on policies that directly improve economic opportunities and living standards.
About 34% of voters said cultural issues should remain the top priority, while the rest viewed both areas as equally important. Analysts say the findings could influence 2026 campaign strategies, with candidates likely to highlight plans addressing inflation, wages, and investment in local communities.
The poll results reflect a growing sentiment that pocketbook issues — from affordable housing and health care access to infrastructure improvements — resonate more deeply with voters than ideological debates, especially in rural and working-class regions of the state where economic challenges remain persistent.
