HUNTSVILLE, AL — In a landmark move that promises to redefine winter sports in the Deep South, the Huntsville City Council has unanimously approved a transformative $44.6 million expansion of the Huntsville Ice Sports Center (ISC). The decision, made at the Council’s June 26 meeting, sets the stage for Huntsville to become a regional hub for ice athletics and tourism.
The bold project will nearly double the size of the current facility, increasing its footprint by over 118,000 square feet. The expansion includes a brand-new arena with seating for 1,254 spectators, five dedicated curling lanes, upgraded locker rooms for men and women, ADA-compliant elevators and seating, and expanded common areas for fans and families alike. Construction is scheduled to commence later this year, with a projected completion date of early 2027.
“This isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a regional game-changer,” said District 3 Council Member Jennie Robinson, reflecting on the project’s far-reaching impact. “Huntsville is making a bold move to become a winter sports destination.”
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the expansion aligns with the city’s trajectory of growth and community investment.
“This expansion has been long overdue,” said Mayor Battle. “With Huntsville’s population surging, this project ensures we provide top-tier recreational opportunities and maintain a connected, active community.”
Yes, but Council Member Michelle Watkins pointed out that while Huntsville boasts numerous first-class sports facilities, it trails behind nearby communities like Albertville and Cullman in one key area: basketball.
The expansion opens the door for Huntsville to host national curling tournaments, increase programming for youth leagues, and welcome more recreational skaters and families year-round. Officials expect it to be an economic catalyst, drawing visitors, athletes, and events from across the Southeast.
Executive Director Dita Dotson-Bowser, who leads the ISC, says the added space will relieve overcrowding and allow more residents to access ice time.
“Our programs have reached capacity,” Dotson-Bowser shared. “This expansion helps us meet demand and supports our mission to serve all ice sports with excellence. We’ll now be able to meet our needs 350 days a year and host larger, more impactful events.”
