Alabama’s new vaping law, HB8, took effect June 1, introducing the state’s first major crackdown on youth vaping.
The law restricts convenience stores to selling just 34 FDA-approved tobacco and menthol vape products. All other flavored vapes are banned from general sale and limited to age-restricted vape shops open only to those 21 and older.
The law also:
- Bans nicotine alternatives in vending machines
- Requires vape products to be U.S.-made
- Creates vaping education programs in schools
- Introduces new licensing rules through the Alabama ABC Board
Two permit types are available:
- A $150 tobacco permit for general retailers
- A $1,000 specialty permit for vape-only shops
These locations are required to post clearly visible signs indicating the 21-and-over age restriction. Permit holders will be notified by email about the changes.
Lawmakers say HB8 aims to reduce teen vaping while keeping regulated products available to adults.
