HUNTSVILLE, AL — The Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) Madison County Unit hosted its annual Eddie C. Sherrod Membership Breakfast on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 9:00 AM. The evAent occurred at the Ernest Knight Center on the Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University campus, located at 4900 Meridian Street N.
This year’s theme, “Challenging and Difficult Times 2025,” reflects the organization’s commitment to addressing key issues facing the community. The breakfast serves as a vital gathering for local leaders, party members, and supporters to discuss policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at uplifting the region.
The ADC, founded in 1960, has long been a voice for African American political empowerment in Alabama, advocating for voter rights, economic equality, and social justice. The annual breakfast honors the legacy of ADC Madison County Unit Chair Eddie C. Sherrod, Sr., a dedicated advocate for civic engagement and political activism.
The program, presided over by Mrs. Brenda Martin, opened with an invocation by Presiding Elder (Ret.) Oliver Allen of the 9th District A.M.E. Church. Attendees joined in the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Mrs. Vanessa Davis, followed by a powerful rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, performed by Dr. Sharon Byrd Collins.
Among the key figures in attendance was Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, who provided greetings to the crowd, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement. Rev. Randy Kelly, Chairman of the Alabama Democratic Party, and Mr. George Herring, representing the 5th Congressional District ADC, also addressed the audience, highlighting the role of advocacy in shaping policy.
A significant moment in the program was the necrology tribute led by Dr. Theodore Chester Dixie, honoring those who have passed, followed by a reflection from Rev. Clauedwell Campbell, Chaplain of the Madison County Unit ADC.
The event’s keynote speaker was The Honorable Marilyn Lands, the Alabama House Representative for District 10. Lands, a licensed professional counselor, has been a strong advocate for mental health reform and maternal healthcare improvements. Her speech emphasized the need for continued community engagement and policies that uplift families and individuals struggling with mental health challenges.
Lands, elected in a special election in March 2024, brings a wealth of experience in community mental health, economic development, and counseling. She has also been actively involved with the Huntsville Rotary Club, the Democratic Women of Madison County, and the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. With a background in business and psychology, she has dedicated her legislative work to improving the lives of Alabama residents.
The program also featured a Youth Challenge presented by Miss Carmella Goree, a Ph.D. candidate at Alabama A&M University, encouraging young leaders to step up in their communities. Eddie C. Sherrod, Sr., Chair of the ADC, delivered closing remarks, followed by a benediction from Elder Oliver Allen.
