The Huntsville City Council approved a $5.1 million road resurfacing contract with an Athens firm on Thursday night.
The contract with Grayson Carter & Son Contracting will cover phase one of the city’s Fiscal 2025 road projects. The first phase consists of 22 projects.
“We’re proceeding with phase one of our annual resurfacing plan to tackle a long list of collector roads across Huntsville,” Chris McNeese, director of Public Works, said. “Up next is our priority lists for phases two and three, and when complete, the city will have spent $20 million in 2025 to repave local streets.”
The phase one contract is for one year. Grayson Carter & Son Contracting will supply all of the labor, materials and equipment for the projects, which consist of improvements and new construction on city roads.
Grayson Carter & Son is required to begin work on the projects within 15 days of the start of the contract.
The company has done similar work for the City of Athens, including projects on Elm Street, Wilkinson Street, Hansen and Hiper roads, Patton and Aerobee roads, as well as a turn lane on U.S. 72 at Lindsey Lane.
Grayson Carter & Son is also one of the developers of a limestone quarry under construction on Mooresville Road in Belle Mina that is opposed by several of the community’s residents.
Making the list to be resurfaced in Huntsville are Alabama 20 NW from Zierdt Road SW to Governors West NW, Bailey Cove Road SE from Weatherly Road SE to Mountain Gap Road SE, Bob Wallace Avenue SE from Whitesburg Drive SE to Memorial Parkway SW, Bob Wallace Avenue SW from First Street SW to Memorial Parkway SW, Bob Wallace Avenue SW from First Street SW to Triana Blvd SW and California Street SE from Governors Drive SE Whitesburg Diver SE.
Also making the list are Green Cove Road SW from Memorial Parkway SW to Redstone Arsenal, Hobbs Island Road from Memorial Parkway SW to Ditto Landing, Holmes Avenue NE from Sparkman Drive NW to Jordan Lane and Jordan Road NE from Moores Mill Rd NE to the city limit sign.
Also to be resurfaced are Lily Flagg Road SE from Whitesburg Drive SE to the end of the street, Lily Flagg Road SW from Whitesburg Drive SE to Memorial Parkway SW, Nick Fitcheard Road NW from Blake Bottom Road NW to Interstate 565, Oakwood Road NW from Jordan Lane NW to Sparkman Drive NW and Old Big Cove Road SE from Billy Lee Road SE to Hampton Ridge Drive SE.
