Gettin’ wins; Hoops leaders emerge

Here’s a look at conference basketball leaders and how they did this week.

CIAA

The Virginia Union men (6-2 CIAA, 3-0 S) eeked by Lincoln (76-74) and dominated Bowie State (86-60) to stay atop the CIAA Northern Division.

Claflin and Fayetteville State are both 6-3 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the South. Claflin clipped WSSU (69-58) and St. Augustine’s (56- 51). FSU edged Livingstone (80- 77) and fell to WSSU (56-55).

Lincoln’s ladies (8-1, 3-0) lead the North after a win over Shaw (73-55). Fayetteville State (7-2, 2-1) leads the South despite losing at home to Livingstone (56- 48). FSU beat WSSU (65-61) on the road.

MEAC

Five teams entered MEAC play Monday tied atop the men’s race with 3-1 records. When the smoke cleared, Maryland Eastern Shore (59-58 over NC Central), Morgan State (77-71 over Norfolk State) and Howard (90-76 over Coppin State) got wins to move to 4-1.

For the MEAC ladies Morgan State moved to 4-0 as it took out its nearest challengers, Howard (71-49, Sat.) and Norfolk State (57-46, Mon.).

SIAC

Savannah State (10-3) leads the men’s SIAC East. The Tigers slipped by Edward Waters (80- 78) Saturday and easily handled Allen (75-54) Monday.

Miles leads the West Division at 11-3. The Golden Bears fell on the road to Tuskegee 70-52 Saturday but came back to win a road game at Spring Hill Monday, 77-65. The women of Tuskegee (12-0) lead the West following a (62-57) win over Miles Saturday. Savannah State (9-3) is the East leader after wins over Edward Waters (73-62) and Allen (74- 55).

SWAC

Alcorn State and Southern are tied at the top of the SWAC men’s race with 4-1 records.

Southern suffered its first conference loss on the road at Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday (62-57). The Jags beat Miss. ValleyS tate 84-70 Monday. Alcorn got wins at home vs. Bethune- Cookman (76-68, Mon.) and Florida A&M (57-47 Sat.).

Jackson State and Alabama A&M are tied in the women’s race at 6-1. JSU won at home over B-CU 82-60 Saturday and Florida A&M Monday 72-51.

Alabama A&M got home wins over Texas Southern (72-69) and Prairie View A&M (66-55).

OTHERS

The NC A&T women lead the CAA with a 7-1 record. The Lady Aggies got wins last week over Stony Brook (68-60) and Hampton (75-70). West Va. State is tied atop the Mountain East Conference at 10-2. The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Glenville State (75-74) and Charleston (88-65).

The men of Langston have the best overall record at 18-1. The Lions defeated SW Christian 83-60 Saturday to move to 12-1 in the NAIA’s Sooner Athletic Conference.
