ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers.  Hope you had a blessed, safe, happy holiday.  There were many good football games last Saturday. I watched the Auburn, Alabama and Louisiana games and was amazed how full of people the stadiums were.  My niece’s son is Billy Napier and he is the head coach of the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns football team. He coached at schools like Alabama and Clemson before his current position with Louisiana.

TEACHER INFECTS STUDENTS
At Martin County schools in California masks were required indoors and desk were sprayed and spaced six feet apart, but Covid-19 found an opening anyway. In May, one teacher who was not vaccinated began feeling fatigue and had some nasal congestion but dismissed it as allergies.  Two days later she tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and half her class had been infected, nearly all of them in the two rows closer to her desk. The outbreak spread to other classes as well.  Their masks were only off part of the day. This is still a serious situation as many parents do not want the mask to be required in school.  Pray and take care of self, family and others.

POLITICAL MESS
Afghanistan is a mess and is not over.  Where are our leaders? It seems none are working together on the many issues facing our country, state and cities.  Have any Democrats been investigated for any wrong doings?

Lawmakers have begun the task of drawing new districts after the census and this is a big deal. Every 10 years a new redistricting takes place.  Ten years ago, I was in Bill Kling’s District and had been for over 30 years.  I attended all the city meetings on the redistricting and Bill Kling, Richard Showers and Will Culver voted me out of my district because I had run for office against Kling for several years.  The city made up a Reed District Plan but it did not pass the council.  The Mayor and Robinson did not vote to throw me out of my district, but the city plan passed and they moved the University Drive line to Bob Wallace which put me in another district.  I called Washington and the person there told me there was no reason for the city to move my district line.

CITY PLANS
Huntsville plans to create a new police and fire precinct. The city establishing a fourth police precinct in west Huntsville and will hire more police officers. They also plan to build a new Fire Station in west Huntsville.

CITY PLANNING
The nice big parking garage across the street from City Hall is being torn down which is not a good idea in my opinion.  The Mayor, Administrative Aide, and Planning Department are ruining our great city. The Administration is going to build City Hall on the property where the garage is now, but no one knows who is getting the current City Hall Property or what the city plans to do with it. Remember, if our city leaders want Huntsville to be the biggest city in Alabama why don’t they just move to a big city.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
