ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. We had beautiful weather over the fourth of July weekend, and it was a good time for family and friends to get together. My brother in-law from Florida was here thru the 4th and we all had great time together.  On Sunday, the 4th we went to see the fireworks at the Toyota Stadium in Madison, and they put on a very entertaining display. It was impressive to see how many people came out to see the fireworks.

VOTING RIGHTS

Can our elected Politicians find a way to protect the voting rights?  It does not matter if you are a Democrat or Republican. The laws should be fair and honest and not based on helping one party over another.  All states should vote the same and the guidelines should be set and signed from Washington with no exceptions. There are many elected officials that do not care about the public and only about their own agenda. I have learned this from my running for office over many years and following government as close as I do.

EDMONTON HEIGHTS

Edmonton Heights families now live in a historical district.  The neighborhood joined the National register of Historic places and sources believe Magnolia Terrace could be next.  Edmonton Heights is the most well preserved of the Black neighborhoods developed during post World War II by Folmaar and Flinn of Alabama. It is one of the largest developments built for Black families displaced from the city center in the 1940 and 1950’s.  The city wants it listed on the national historical register.  This would be great for this area but those in this area need to attend the historical meetings to learn about the restrictions.

REALTORS IN HUNTSVILLE

There are 7 Realtors for every home listed for sale in Huntsville. Many people attended a Planning Department meeting last week protested a plan to build two humongous new homes on a lot in their neighborhood that was previously two lots and has been empty for years.  They begged the city to think about what it would do to their neighborhood.  The Planning Department needs to have work session on these issues before voting on these items.  It seems our Planning Department does not care about other citizens when the developers come in to get what they want. Why are they so hung up on condos being built everywhere which seem to be hurting the sale of homes?

I hope someday I will be convinced that the politicians everywhere are working for the people as I am still a bit upset about the Coke Property.  Please go to downtown Huntsville and see what your Council person is voting to do with all the city’s so-called SURPLUS.  They are taking good care of the developers.

Love you all and have a blessed week.
